First-Gen Family Toolkit

This toolkit provides information about campus resources that support Seaver College students. We understand that family members are integral to first-gen student success, and we aim to empower you with useful information.

Who are first-generation college students at Pepperdine?

Pepperdine considers any student who does not have a parent or guardian with a bachelor’s degree to be a first-generation college student.

What does it take to succeed at Pepperdine?

Students are most likely to succeed when they are supported in attaining academic success, physical and mental health, overall well-being, and leadership skills. Pepperdine offers free campus resources to support these needs.

Other Resources

In addition to your student’s day-to-day success and wellbeing, the following resources support career development, student employment, global citizenship, and financial preparedness.

Career Preparation

The Seaver College Career Center assists students in exploring careers, writing resumes, identifying potential internships, conducting job searches, preparing for interviews, and networking with alumni and other professionals. Students can view and apply for on and off-campus jobs and internships on Handshake.

Testimonials

Ariana Bribiesca

I am deeply grateful for the Career Center. There are many career advisors, directors, and event managers who are first-generation college graduates or allies. They have guided me through my first on-campus job with Pepperdine Intercultural Affairs, setting up my LinkedIn profile, interview preparation, and securing my first accounting internship. All of the Career Center events and programs are extremely helpful and carefully catered to student interests.

First-Generation Club

Student Employment

The Student Employment Office coordinates with the Federal Work Study Program and the Pepperdine Work Program to support student employment. They also help connect students with on and off-campus job opportunities. For best results, students are encouraged to start the job search early.

As a first-generation college student, this experience developed my communication and leadership skills. I have gained meaningful connections through my work with Facilities.

First-Gen Family Member FAQs

This is my student’s first time living away from home. How will they be supported?

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) supports students in a number of ways:

  • Resident Advisors cultivate supportive relationships with students living on campus and help new students adjust to resident life.
  • Spiritual Life Advisors lead small groups and provide spiritual support.
  • Professional Resident Directors maintain safe, caring living environments. They are available for student consultations, emergency responses, and other concerns.
  • HRL also provides instructions and information specifically for first-year students.
What should my student bring to campus?

Please see the recommended packing list.

What is my role as a family member of a first-gen student?

Your student will continue to benefit from your encouragement as they transition to college life. The bond you share motivates them to persist and thrive here on campus.  Please know that the Student Success Center (SSC) is eager to connect with you as your family learns more about the college experience.

Your student may become more independent as they gain confidence at Pepperdine. However, that does not make your relationship with them any less important. Your willingness to listen, learn, and celebrate alongside them makes their success that much more meaningful.
