Sports Medicine Course Sequence

First-Year Course Sequence

During your first year, it is recommended that all Sports Medicine (SPME) and pre-SPME majors complete the following science courses:

Calculus I (MATH 150)
The one year sequence of General Chemistry (CHEM120/120L and 121/121L)
Introduction to the Exercise Sciences (SPME 110)
Human Anatomy (SPME 230/BIOL 230)

Additional university requirements dictate non-science course options. As a result, there is little flexibility in determining first year courses.  To view your probable first year course schedule, complete the three steps that follow.

Step One - Placement Information

Eligibility to enroll in mathematics and chemistry courses is based upon your scores on the mathematics portion of either the SAT or ACT.  If you did not achieve certain minimum scores on these exams, you must take additional math and/or chemistry courses prior to enrolling in MATH 150 or CHEM 120/120L.

For math and chemistry placement purposes, you may not retake the SAT/ACT once you have started your courses at Pepperdine University.  Once you begin coursework at Pepperdine you can not change your placement level for mathematics and chemistry courses.

Step Two - Course Waivers

Students who have completed the AB Calculus Advanced Placement Exam with a score of three or higher have satisfied the MATH 150 requirement.  You may substitute an elective course in the following sequences.

Students who desire to complete the Great Books Colloquium should substitute the first two courses in the Great Books sequence for the English courses (ENG 101 and ENG 102) listed in the following sequences.

Step Three - Get Your Course Plan!

PLAN 1

The following first-year course schedule is recommended:

Fall Semester Spring Semester
ENG 101 (3) ENG 102 (4)
Freshman Seminar (3) SPE 180 (4)
SPME 110 (1) PE 199 (2)
BIOL 230 (4)* MATH 150 (4)*
CHEM 120 (3) CHEM 121 (3)
CHEM 120P/120L (1) CHEM 121P/121L (1)
17 credit hours 16 credit hours

*You may switch the BIOL 230 and MATH 150 courses between the fall and spring semesters.

PLAN 2

The following first-year course schedule is recommended:

Fall Semester Spring Semester
ENG 101 (3) ENG 102 (4)
Freshman Seminar (3) SPE 180 (4)
SPME 110 (1) PE 199 (2)
MATH 103 (3) CHEM 120 (3)
MATH 104 (2) CHEM 120P/120L (1)
SPME/BIOL 230 (4) MATH 150 (4)
16 credit hours 18 credit hours

During your second year you would complete the remaining portion of the general chemistry sequence (in addition to other courses). CHEM 121 (3) and CHEM 121P/121L (1) in the fall and spring semester respectively.

An alternative to this plan would be to complete the CHEM 121/121L courses (or their equivalent) during the summer term between your sophomore and freshman years

PLAN 3

The following first-year course schedule is recommended:

Fall Semester Spring Semester
ENG 101 (3) ENG 102 (4)
Freshman Seminar (3) SPE 180 (4)
SPME 110 (1) PE 199 (2)
MATH 099 (3) MATH 103 (3)
Elective Course (4) or BIOL 230 (4) MATH 104 (2)
PE 199 (2)
16 credit hours 17 credit hours

During your second year you would complete MATH 150 and the CHEM 120/120L/121/121L sequence (in addition to other courses).

Fall Semester Spring Semester
CHEM 120 (3) MATH 150 (4)
CHEM 120P/120L (1) CHEM 121 (3)
CHEM 121P/121L (1)
