About the 3/2 Engineering Program

What is the 3/2 Engineering program?

The 3/2 Engineering program allows the student to obtain a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Natural Science from Pepperdine University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from either the University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering or Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

The student will spend three years at Pepperdine University completing all required General Education and required coursework in the Natural Science Division. After successful completion of all courses in the degree program at Pepperdine University, the student applies to transfer to either USC or Washington University. The student will spend two years at either university completing all required engineering courses. Upon completion of all coursework from Pepperdine University and either USC or Washington University, the student will graduate from both universities.

May I participate in the commencement ceremony after completing the first three years at Pepperdine University?

The student must successfully complete all required courses at Pepperdine and either USC or Washington University before they can participate in the commencement ceremony (i.e., “walk for graduation”) at Pepperdine University. The 3/2 Engineering/B.A. in Natural Science from Pepperdine will be granted only after successful completion of all required courses from Pepperdine and either USC or Washington University.

Are there any other universities affiliated with the 3/2 program at Pepperdine University?

At this time, we only have articulation agreements with USC and Washington University.

May I complete my engineering coursework at another university and participate in the 3/2 Engineering program at Pepperdine?

Unfortunately, the complexities of maintaining our articulation agreements and ensuring that we properly advise and monitor the degree progress of our Pepperdine students require that we limit our engineering partners to only USC and Washington University. Students who desire to complete their engineering coursework at another university are welcome to transfer to this school; however, they will not earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pepperdine University upon completion of the engineering coursework.

What must be done before I can transfer to either USC or Washington University?

Each student must complete all undergraduate general education requirements and required courses in the B.A. in Natural Science degree program at Pepperdine University before transferring to either school.

Besides completing all required courses are there any other requirements I must complete at Pepperdine University?

The student must meet with the 3/2 Engineering advisor each semester to review the courses he or she must enroll in for the following semester. During the transfer process the 3/2 Engineering advisor will be available to help with any unforeseen problems.

What am I responsible for during this transfer process?

The student is responsible for completing and submitting all application packages and sending all required transcripts. USC requires high school transcripts. Washington University does not require high school transcripts.

If I am admitted to the 3/2 Engineering program at Pepperdine University does that automatically guarantee my acceptance at either USC or Washington University?

The student must apply for admission as a transfer student and must meet all course requirements specified by either USC or Washington University. The 3/2 Engineering advisor will meet with the student once a semester to make sure that the student is meeting the transfer requirements and is informed of any changes that are made by either USC or Washington University. The application for each school can be found at the websites listed below. Each school will inform the prospective student of his or her acceptance or rejection to their respective engineering program.

May I transfer my financial aid package from Pepperdine University to USC or Washington University?

The transferring student must apply for financial aid at each school during the transfer process. Financial aid applications should be submitted along with the transfer applications. Financial aid packages are awarded by either USC or Washington University after the student has been accepted. You Pepperdine University financial aid is specific to Pepperdine University and is not applicable at either USC or Washington University.

About USC

Where can I find information regarding the 3-2 Engineering program and transfer process?

Students can find all necessary forms for transferring at: https://viterbiadmission.usc.edu/transfer/#stepstotransfer

Where can I find the curriculum for each engineering program offered at USC?

Students can review the curriculum for each program at: https://viterbiadmission.usc.edu/academics/

Where can I find information regarding financial aid for USC?

Students can learn more about the CSS Profile (The CSS Profile is a financial form similar to the FAFSA) and USC Financial Aid process at: https://financialaid.usc.edu/undergraduates/prospective/students.html

What GPA is needed for applying to the 3-2 Engineering program?

USC requires a minimum 3.0 GPA in all courses taken at Pepperdine University and within their math/science courses.

What mathematics courses do I need to take before I transfer to USC?

Calculus I, II, and III are required for all 3-2 engineering majors. In addition all 3-2 engineering majors require Differential Equations with the exception of the Industrial Systems and Engineering ISE and Computer Engineering and Computer Science programs, these programs also require linear algebra.

What computer courses are required for the Engineering Program at USC?

C++ (COSC 105) is required for Industrial Systems and Engineering (ISE) and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. MATLAB is required for all other engineering programs.

Are there any non-required courses that I should take before I transfer to USC?

Students pursuing Aerospace, Mechanical and Astronautical degrees are encouraged to take courses covering Statics, Dynamics and Strength of Materials prior to enrolling to USC. Of these, Statics is the most important is giving the student flexibility and is needed in order for the student to finish in two years.

About Washington University, St. Louis

Where can I find information regarding the dual degree (3-2 Engineering) program?

Are there any non-required courses that I should take before I transfer to Washington University?

Students are encouraged to take statics, dynamics, thermal physics, statistics (MATH 316 will suffice) and an environmental course before entering Washington University. The environmental course can be at any level as long as it approaches environmental issues from a scientific perspective. Taking these courses will help ease the course load for the dual degree program.
