Topics and descriptions of their presentations are listed below. Join us for an engaging and exciting glimpse into the classroom experience. Alumni, reconnect with two of your favorite professors.

  • Michelangelo's Faith Journey as Seen in His Pietàs (Cindy Colburn)
Michelangelo's exceptionally long artistic career allows us to experience his spiritual journey through his works of art. In this talk, Colburn highlights Michelangelo's evolving personal sense of faith by analyzing a single artistic subject that he produced several times, the Pietà, the final version of which was left incomplete upon his death at the age of 88. By analyzing the contexts in which Michelangelo's artworks were created, students move beyond the formal analysis of a work of art to a thorough contextual analysis informed by history, religion, politics, and more.
  • Great Books and Student Flourishing (Paul Contino
With examples drawn from the Seaver College Great Books Colloquium, Contino will highlight ways in which the close reading of authors vital to the Christian intellectual tradition—followed by reflective writing and collaborative conversation—enriches our students' spiritual lives and contributes to their sense of flourishing. Using PowerPoint, Contino will draw examples from authors studied in the Colloquium—including Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Dante, Pascal, Dostoevsky, Simone Weil, and Martin Luther King, Jr.—and will share anecdotes from past classes.
