Pepperdine Earns EAB’s 2022 Technology Pioneer Award

Dr. Killpatrick and Elizabeth Richter

Pepperdine was recently awarded the EAB 2022 Technology Pioneer award for innovative leadership in student success. Senior Associate Dean Kendra Killpatrick has led the college in its implementation of the student success platform Navigate, working with an outstanding leadership team comprised of individuals from OneStop, the Student Success Center, Athletics, IMC, IT and the Seaver Dean’s Office.

“Our goal for all Seaver students is that they find an academic program that challenges and inspires them and that they are able to graduate successfully from Pepperdine,” says Killpatrick. “Using the Navigate platform allows us to provide students with holistic academic support, incorporating many areas of the College such as OneStop, the Student Success Center, faculty advisors and more. In addition, the analytics from the platform provides important information about which students could benefit from additional academic support, and we can provide those resources in a timely manner.”

Navigate’s usefulness has resonated with students, as 95% of first-year undergraduates at Seaver College have downloaded the mobile app. In using this platform, which is managed by Associate Dean Kindy De Long, students receive an array of resources meant to spur them forward in their academic careers.  Particularly, the Navigate app allows undergraduates to receive helpful academic to-do lists, registration options, releasing advising or financial holds, while also streamlining filing for graduation.

Alongside advocating on behalf of this helpful resource, Pepperdine University has served as an Alpha Partner for Next Gen Academic Planning. Within this collaboration, the University has helped to build an effective tool, which allows students to create their optimal four-year graduation plan.  By designing this plan on Navigate, advisors across campus have the ability to view and offer feedback to their students.

“Students, faculty, and campus staff have become savvier with respect to combining both online and in-person student support services,” claims EAB President of Technology, Scott Schirmeier. “The winners of EAB’s 2022 Student Success Collaborative Awards are leading the way in rethinking the student support model and using technology in creative ways to keep students on track to graduate.”

The EAB 2022 Technology Pioneer award recognizes Pepperdine as a leader in leveraging technology in the advancement of student success. More than that, the honor illustrates Seaver College’s commitment to building a nurturing environment of academic success.
