Rebecca Boggs Roberts to Give 19th Amendment Centennial Lecture

Pepperdine Libraries and Seaver College’s Social Science Division are hosting an online lecture from author and curator Rebecca Boggs Roberts on August 19 at 4:30 PM PDT. The lecture will celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment ratification that gave women the right to vote on August 18, 1920. 

Roberts is a journalist, author, curator, historical tour guide, and political consultant, among many other passions and vocations. Her books include Historic Congressional Cemetery, Suffragists in Washington, DC: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote, and the forthcoming The Suffragist Playbook: Your Guide to Changing the World, which aims to empower young girls to get involved in their own activism. Her work expands understanding of the history of women in politics and the history of Washington, DC. 

The lecture was, in part, made possible by Seaver alumna Jessica Grounds (’03). Since graduating from Seaver College, Grounds worked in Washington, DC to promote women's political advancement and equality of opportunity for women for more than 16 years. Grounds was recognized for her work in advocating for and empowering women in politics when she was named as one of 2019’s Outstanding Alumni Women in Leadership. In fall 2020, Grounds joined Pepperdine’s faculty as an instructor of “Women and Politics.” With the move to remote instruction, she thought it would be the perfect opportunity to draw on her network in Washington, DC to bring guest speakers to her virtual classroom. This is the first lecture of many Grounds hopes will be open to the Pepperdine community.
