Somer holds a specialist instruction credential in reading. She served as the founding bilingual reading specialist at Sumac Elementary School, a Spanish dual immersion program in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. With over 13 years of experience as a teacher in the public school system and charter management organizations, Somer has empowered K-12 students and colleagues via roles as a high school English teacher, elementary reading specialist, and literacy coach. Her research interests are in family literacy and effective instructional practices to support students with dyslexia in the general education setting. Somer has taught parent workshops at several elementary schools to demystify how children learn to read and empower families with tools to support literacy development at home.
