Students presenting their research in Health Humanities

Health Humanities Minor

The Health Humanities Minor is an interdisciplinary program that deploys the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences to explore the human experiences of health, illness, and healing in their broader contexts. The minor inculcates virtues like empathy and ethical discernment even as it sharpens critical thinking about historical developments and social, cultural, and political realities. It equips students with resources to confront both suffering and caregiving with thoughtfulness. Further, it prepares students for a broad range of careers in the health professions and healthcare industry, non-profit advocacy, and government.

The Curriculum (18 Units)

Pepperdine’s Health Humanities program emphasizes the benefits of interdisciplinary study, rigorous academics, and a commitment to service and compassion.

Student Opportunities

Students in the minor benefit from complementary coursework to the pre-health track, as well as dedicated faculty mentorship from both humanities scholars and health-related professionals. They also have opportunities to engage in research through programs such as Faculty-Student Mentorship, SURP, AYURI, and CDIUR. These experiences prepare graduates for careers in medicine, healthcare, law, policy, and nonprofit service. Learn more by visiting our Student Research Opportunities webpage.
