Master of Arts in Religion
The Master of Arts in Religion program is offered in five specializations: Old Testament,
New Testament, Church History, Ministry, and Christian Thought. These programs are
designed for those who wish to pursue doctoral degrees or who seek teaching positions
in public and private schools.
Master of Arts in Religion Courses
Our classes are offered at a variety of times to accommodate those students currently serving in full-time ministry positions. We offer small class sizes providing an intimate learning environment in which graduate students develop close relationships with mentoring faculty who are leaders in their disciplines.
Prerequisites
It is expected that applicants for a master of arts in religion, master of divinity, or master of science in ministry have completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university prior to the time of graduate matriculation. A bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree is required along with any other prerequisites listed for this graduate program. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be certain all requirements have been met at the time the file is considered for admission.
A year and a half of a relevant foreign or classical language should be completed at the college level for all disciplines. For a specialization in New Testament, the requirement is Greek; for Old Testament the requirement is Hebrew; for the other disciplines, consultation with an advisor is necessary.
In addition, those students choosing a specialization must have completed 16 units of upper-level undergraduate work in religion, 12 units of which must have been in the area of specialty. For the specialization in church history, these units may include approved history courses; for Christian thought, these units may include approved philosophy courses.
Transfer of Credits
For degree purposes, upon approval of the Religion and Philosophy Division Chairperson, a maximum of two courses totaling no more than eight units of graduate work may be transferred towards the M.A. in Religion. All transfer work must be from regionally accredited colleges and universities, completed at a graduate level, and no work with a grade lower than B will be accepted.
