Smiling student shakes hands with professorAt the end of March 2022, six Seaver students‚‚Faith Lane, Annabella Nordlund, Nicole Son, Garrett Schroeder, Angelea Hayes, and Emma Thomas‚‚traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the Sigma Tau Delta International Conference. These six students were selected to read their creative and academic writing at the conference. Emma Thomas (22) won a first-place conference prize for her collection of poems titled My Dear, Josephine.

Her collection of poems is a historical fiction, narrative poetry collection centered on Josephine Baker, an American-born Black woman, actress, civil rights activist, cabaret dancer, and French Resistance agent from the 1920s. Written from through the eyes of a fictional barman, the collection tells the story of the barman and Baker deepening connection and his discovery that there is more to Baker than the glittery facade.

Reading my writing at the conference felt incredibly encouraging and exciting, Thomas shares. As an aspiring author, it felt affirming to hear people connection to my writing when they asked thoughtful questions at the end, and I felt honored that the judges liked my work.
