Abigail Raphael Collins Curates New LACE Exhibit

Abigail Raphael Collins, adjunct professor of art at Seaver College, curated the Emerging Curator Exhibition, which opens on January 8, 2020, at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). Collin’s exhibit titled SOUND OFF: Silence + Resistance explores how silence is used as a form of political and social resistance.

Between teaching her photography students to create pieces that matter and developing her own art, Raphael Collins curates as a way to explore ideas and give back to an artistic community. While many might initially think of an oppressor’s oft-used tool of silencing, Raphael Collins’ exhibit shows how silence can be used as an expression of resistance and a tool to recapture agency. Featured artists include Nikita Gale, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Sharon Hayes, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Aliza Shvartz, and more.

Raphael Collins received her bachelor’s from Cooper Union and her master’s from UCLA. Her previous work has shed light on the relationships between the media and its formation of perceived reality.

Raphael Collins is the fifth Emerging Curator for LACE. The program is designed to discover curatorial talent in Los Angeles and gives an opportunity for an emerging curator to partner with LACE. Applicants are reviewed by a panel that recommends a compelling project to the LACE team consistent with LACE’s experimental spirit.
