John Emison
Biography
John Emison is an artist and educator based in Los Angeles. His work often takes the form of subtle shifts in alignment, orientation, register, and scale.
His teaching in sculpture, interdisciplinary practice, drawing, and painting is informed by the histories and theories of art as material culture, labor, and political imagination. He also brings his professional experience in art and design studios, galleries, and museums to the classroom studio in support of students as they consider the role of artistic labor in their lives.
Most recently his practice-based research includes letter carving in stone, astronomy, and the relationship between the living and the dead. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, screenings, performances, and programing in alternative spaces, galleries, and institutions across the United States. He received an MFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University, and a BA in Art and Anthropology from Colgate University.
