Best Off-Campus Study Spots in Malibu

Studying with an ocean view

When finals week hits or a long reading list piles up, sometimes the best thing you can do is step off-campus. While there's nothing wrong with Payson Library (it's one of the most beautiful academic libraries in Southern California), a change of environment can reset your focus, spark new ideas, and help stave off burnout during heavier stretches of the semester. Malibu is full of cafes, bookstores, and scenic outdoor nooks that make even the longest study session feel a little more inspiring. The best off-campus study spots in Malibu offer a change of scenery and good coffee with the sound of waves in the background.

Cross Creek & Malibu Country Mart

The Cross Creek shopping district, which includes the Malibu Country Mart and the Park at Cross Creek, is the most convenient off-campus study zone for Seaver students. It's just a short drive down PCH from campus, and walkable once you arrive, with plenty of options to cafe-hop as the day stretches on.

Pura Vida Miami

The newest buzz at Cross Creek Ranch, Pura Vida opened in late 2025 and quickly became a student go-to. Expect a bright space with açaí bowls, salads, smoothies, and coffee. Plenty of tables and strong Wi-Fi make it ideal for a two-to-three-hour session.

Alfred Coffee

A longtime Pepperdine favorite tucked into the Country Mart, Alfred's is known for its "but first, coffee" tagline. Best for a focused solo spring—grab an oat latte, claim a chair, and knock out a problem set.

SunLife Organics

Malibu's go-to for smoothies, açaí bowls, and fresh juices, SunLife's Country Mart location has a sunny outdoor patio that's ideal for a lighter session or a catch-up with a study partner. Bring a friend, a charged laptop, and sunglasses.

Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle sits in the same lot as Whole Foods at the park at Cross Creek. The coffee is elite (the "NOLA" is iconic), but seating is limited, so consider it a caffeine stop between longer study blocks at nearby spots.

Zinqué

Just a quick hop over to Malibu Colony Plaza, Zinqué brings Parisian café energy to the Malibu Road stretch — sleek countertops, an airy bistro feel, and an all-day menu that shifts from breakfast and lunch into full dinner service. Mornings are best for studying, when the space leans café over restaurant.

Point Dume Village

A little farther west, Point Dume Village trades the Cross Creek bustle for a quieter, more residential feel. SunLife loyalists, you're in luck — there's a second location here too. Otherwise, the village is worth the drive when you want real calm.

Le Cafe de la Plage

A beachside gem with artisan pastries, vegan latte option, and house-made ice cream in flavors like rose-raspberry-lychee. The cafe's "Good Vibes Only" energy makes it a great inspiration-over-output spot—perfect reading, journaling, or light writing.

Lily's Malibu

A 30-year Malibu business best known for its legendary breakfast burritos, Lily's isn't a laptop-friendly lock-in, but it's a perfect launch pad for a morning of studying. Grab a bacon breakfast burrito and settle in at one of the outside tables in the village.

Along PCH: Beach-Adjacent & Iconic Spots

Some of the best study spots in Malibu aren't in a plaza at all. These are the stops that remind you why you picked a school with ocean views in the first place.

Malibu Pier

Malibu Farm

Studying over the Pacific? The pier location of Malibu Farm turns a regular reading session into something special. It's busier at meal times, so time your visit carefully — mid-morning or late afternoon is your best bet for a table and the view you came for.

Malibu Bluffs Park

For outdoor studying, Malibu Bluffs is hard to beat. Picnic tables near the entrance offer Wi-Fi and open-air focus; a short walk along the trails reveals quieter corners with panoramic ocean views. Pack a blanket and go early to claim a shady spot.

Caffe Luxxe

Across from Carbon Beach on the East Malibu stretch of PCH, Caffe Luxxe is the kind of calm, well-designed espresso bar that invites deep focus. Pepperdine students swear by it for long reading blocks — warm interior, quality drinks, minimal distractions.

Sea N Soul Surf + Zuma Beach

This one's for the full Malibu lifestyle. Sea N Soul is a boutique coffee-and-surf shop on PCH just steps from Zuma Beach. Post up on the sand with your notes, then pop back inside for a latte between chapters.

Tips for a Productive Off-Campus Study Session

A change of scenery only works if you come prepared. A few quick tips:

  • Charge everything before you go, and bring a backup power bank
  • Scout Wi-Fi quality before committing to a long session (some Malibu cafes have spotty signal)
  • Go midweek or off-peak to guarantee a table
  • Pair noisier spots (Pura Vida, Alfred) with headphones, and save quieter spots (Caffe Luxxe, Bluffs Park) for heads-down work
  • Build in a walk or break. Malibu's scenery is one of your best mental resets!

Making the Most of Studying in Malibu

One of the best parts of being a Pepperdine student is that your “study break” can literally be a beach walk. Balancing a demanding course load with the Malibu environment means leaning into both—knowing when to lock in, and when a coffee run across PCH is exactly what you need. With so many off-campus study spots in Malibu, you can design your week around your focus, not the other way around.
