Heidelberg Summer Music Program

Explore

Music students have the opportunity to study abroad at the University's campus in Heidelberg, Germany. The Heidelberg Summer Music Program provides opportunities for intensive training for singers and instrumentalists. Studies include chamber music, acting techniques for singers, German and general education courses. Students receive expert input from distinguished guest faculty. Educational field trips to European cultural centers like Salzburg, Prague and Vienna enrich the experience immeasurably. The activities of the summer culminate in performances of opera scenes and chamber music in some of the most beautiful venues in Heidelberg's old town. Moore Haus, the students' home during the eight-week summer program, is located just a few steps from one of Europe's most popular destinations – the romantic Heidelberg Castle.

Since 2009, the Heidelberg music students have participated in concerts with local musical organizations in the Austrian province of Carinthia. This relationship began as a result of archival research discoveries by the Summer Music Program's founder Henry Price. Pepperdine music students and Austrian musicians combine to celebrate the hospitality of the local people in 1779, as related in a memoir by a member of Emanuel Schikaneder's traveling acting troupe. A permanent plaque commemorating Schikaneder's visit to the area was presented to the community by the University and now rests on the parsonage that housed the troupe more than 230 years ago.
