  Director, Heidelberg Program

International Programs seeks nominations and applications for the position of director of Seaver College’s Heidelberg international program. This position, which reports directly to the Dean of International Programs, provides overall administrative leadership and management of the program.  The primary mission of the Heidelberg Program is to empower students to develop global competence and cultural humility through an inclusive learning community, academic excellence, real-world experience, and faith formation. The director must demonstrate an active commitment to the Christian mission of the University and the mission of Seaver College.

Duties

  • Direct the academic and curricular programming including recruitment, hiring, orientation, and support of the faculty.
  • Liaise with the IP Malibu office, divisional deans, and the IP Associate Dean to plan course offerings, hire adjunct faculty, coordinate internships, and assist with curricular assessment.
  • Support Seaver College Faculty-in-Residence by providing guidance, resources, and clarity of role in the program.
  • Engage students with the local community by developing opportunities and programs that incentivize interaction with local citizens.
  • Plan and coordinate international travel and local field trips including leadership and annual participation in two Educational Field Trips outside of Germany.
  • Lead all student development activities including promoting community bonding, mentoring, upholding community standards, and mediating disputes.
  • Oversee and coordinate support for students’ health and well-being, emergency response protocols, counseling resources, and student accessibility services.
  • Support all Global Fellows and RAs through mentorship and leadership development.
  • Manage program budget.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate local staff in accordance with local labor law and Pepperdine best practices.
  • Oversee management of local residential and academic facilities.
  • Teach at least one course per year.
  • Communicate regularly with the IP Dean, IP Associate Dean, and the IP Senior Director of Operations. The Heidelberg Director reports directly to the IP Dean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Uphold the University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be committed to the Christian mission of Pepperdine University, invested in college students’ faith formation and spiritual growth, and personally active in a community of faith.
  • Required to have a Master’s degree; PhD (or other terminal degree) preferred.
  • Required to have three years of experience working with students in US higher education; preference for three years of experience working with study abroad college students.
  • Required to have at least two years of managerial experience; preference for at least two years of experience managing a study abroad program.
  • Required to have spent at least one year living in a country other than the candidate’s country of origin.
  • Required to have knowledge of European culture and experience living in a European city; strong preference for German language proficiency as well as having lived for at least one year in Germany.
  • Must be collaborative, engaging with students, and committed to serving as an administrator and an educator.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must have competency in using office software such as Google Suite or Microsoft Office; preference for experience with website design and social media.
  • Preferred knowledge of Pepperdine University, private faith-based institutions, or international programs model similar to that of Pepperdine University.
  • Qualified individuals should be able to articulate a strong commitment to diversity, and have the ability to work effectively with individuals from different backgrounds.
  • The salary for this appointment will range from $115,000 to $140,000 and reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant, as well as market conditions. In addition to base compensation, Pepperdine offers a robust suite of employee benefits.
