Students enrolled in the Summer College program enroll in two undergraduate courses for a total of 6-7 units of semester credit. All students are required to take PSYC 200 (description below) and then choose a second course. 7 units is the maximum course load. Summer College students are not eligible to audit courses.
As is to be expected at a prestigious institution, course work is demanding, and grading is far more rigorous than in high school. Summer College students are graded on the same scale as undergraduate students, and instructor expectations are the same for all students. That being said, students are encouraged to use the Summer College experience to explore new disciplines and not take the worn path in order to get an A. Instead consider this an opportunity to stretch academically.
Required Course
PSYC 200, Introduction to Psychology (3 units)
All Summer College students will enroll in Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 200). This course begins in mid-June in an on-line format and is completed in a traditional classroom setting when students arrive at Pepperdine.
As a supplement to PSYC 200 students will take four one-hour self-discovery labs in which they will explore the college selection/admission process, college essay writing and choosing a major.
Additional Course
In addition to PSYC 200 students will enroll in a second course and may choose from any undergraduate course that does not require a pre-requisite.
Both classes, PSYC 200 and the course chosen by the student, will contain summer college students as well as undergraduates.
Summer College 2009 Course List
Summer College students earn full Pepperdine University credit for the course work they complete. Evaluation of transfer credit is always at the discretion of the receiving institution. Interested students should contact their prospective college's admission office for more information. To transfer credit from Pepperdine, students will need to contact the Registrar's Office.
All summer academic work completed by Summer College students may be applied toward a Seaver College undergraduate degree should a student subsequently be admitted to a Bachelor's degree program at Seaver College.
Courses are taught by Seaver College faculty as well as distinguished visiting scholars from major universities around the world. Summer classes tend to be smaller than those in other semesters, allowing for greater interaction between faculty and students.
Participants in the Summer College for High School Students program have non-degree status and enjoy all the campus privileges of regularly admitted students.
The hub of learning for Pepperdine University is the University Library System. Payson Library, on the Malibu campus; libraries at the Culver City, Irvine, Long Beach, Encino, and Westlake Village centers; and the Harnish Law Library, also on the Malibu Campus, contain a combined collection of 925,400 volumes of library resources in all formats, including 3,200 periodical subscriptions. Supplementary to this material is a networked database system providing access to 7,000 periodical titles, with full-text delivery of 2,500 of those titles in electronic format. A staff of highly committed librarians is available to assist students in the use of these resources and to help students develop strong analytical and information-seeking skills.
Residential Technology and Computer Labs
Pepperdine residence halls are equipped with ethernet connections that provide free, direct, high speed access to the Internet and the Pepperdine network for students who live on campus (Residence Halls, Seaver Apts., Towers, and Page Apts.). These connections are faster than a modem and do not tie up your phone lines. Pepperdine provides these connections for the purpose of helping students achieve their academic goals, gain marketable knowledge of technology, and enhance their on-campus living. There is no fee for these connections and technology assistance is available through Tech Central; however computers are not provided. Students are welcome to bring their own computer and may need to purchase and/or bring an ethernet card and cable. In addition to these residential connections, there are several computer labs around campus including the Howard A. White Center, Payson Library, and the Sandbar Cafe. Summer College students have access to all Seaver College computing services.
The Disability Services Office is dedicated to maintaining an environment that guarantees all students with disabilities at Pepperdine University full access to its educational programs, activities, and facilities. The DSO is responsible for providing services and determining reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities based on supporting documentation.
We ask that Summer College students requiring disabilities services contact the Disabilities Services Office at least four weeks prior to the start of the program to make arrangements for accommodations.
