Film Ministry

This convocation intends to use film ministry to develop spiritual lives from a Christian perspective, while preparing those same students for Film Ministry of their own.  During the 6 weeks the group will screen the "Reel Spirituality" DVD filmed at Pepperdine last fall, and then at three of the short films from Kieslowski's The Decalogue.  (Note from Michael Gose: not until I became involved with Reel Spirituality and The City of Angels Film Festival did I discover the religious power of The Decalogue.  The world recognizes it as great cinema; those involved with Reel Spirituality showed me its potential to develop spiritual lives from a Christian perspective.)

How'd They Do That?  Teaching Truth with Dynamic DVDs (10 student limit)

Rob Bell is a spiky-headed blonde guy who makes profound, mysterious and humorous short DVDs that convey Biblical truth.  His series of teaching spots, each about 15 minutes long, serve to inspire and challenge viewers while causing them to ask: "How did he come up with that wacky idea for a DVD?"  A study guide provides great questions after the teaching.  This is a convo for those who want to see the ancient teachings of Jesus in a contemporary setting, and for those wondering how to use visual imagery to teach Biblical truths.

"This is the Day that the Lord has Made": Honoring God with Your Time

This Club Convo addresses the Christian understanding of time as well as good practices for time's proper management.  Its themes include a) setting one's day is a transcendent perspective, b) honoring the "Sabbath,", c) the discipline of daily prayer, and d) the theology of sleep.  The first week introduces the topic and group members to each other.  Short readings of each of the four themes offer ideas for reflection and discussion over the next sessions in turn, with the final session devoted to our conclusions and encouragement for members to continue putting the ideas into practice.

God's Desire for You to Free Yourself from Food, Weight, and Dieting Worries (for women only, 12 student limit)

God has provided us with a rich bounty of foods to eat and enjoy.  God doesn't make "bad" food so why then do we feel so "guilty" when we eat too much or eat certain types of foods?  It is God's desire for us to honor our hunger and nourish ourselves nutritionally and spiritually.  This Convo will be led by a Registered Dietitian/ Nutrition Therapist and will help you explore not only your nutritional well-being but also help you improve your relationship with food.  Each week will cover a new topic like mindful eating, the "diet" mentality, what is the best food for optimal health, fitness and energy, how to deal with cafeteria style eating, stress eating and more.  In this small group participation is encouraged.  Nutritious food samples will be provided.

Life Lessons from the Book of James

A Bible study at the home of Professor and Mrs. White in Agora Hills.  The Bible study will meet early Wednesday evenings.  We plan on covering approximately one chapter each week from the book of James.

Short on theology, but long on practical advice on how one should live one's life, the book of James is the closest thing there is in the New Testament to the "wisdom literature" of the Old Testament, e.g., the book of Proverbs.

Hero's Journey Christianity

Come writers, artists, musicians, teachers, video game designers, entertainers, and students of Christianity.  The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia books and films have demonstrated the power of the Christian spirit in epic storytelling, and the rising generation is longing for these classical ideals not only in our living art, but in our lives.  We will read The Book of Matthew and discuss how best to serve our peers with the Word.  "There is a difference between knowing the path and walking it," and this Club Convo is devoted to performing classical Christian ideals in the contemporary context.  You will find no better mentor nor guide than the Word during your own hero's journey in exalting and entertaining your generation in tomorrow's books, films, games, classes, and ventures.  So join us in sharing dreams for tomorrow's renaissance.

Let's Get Real about Race

Most of us have an opinion about the state of race relations in America today.  Some of us believe that we have come a long way since the civil rights movement and that racism is a thing of the past.  Still others believe that things have changed very little.  Are racial matters more complex and broad than the traditional black and white framework?  Or maybe there are still significant issues for us to confront.

In this club convo, we will examine race.  We will look at intercultural communication and competency.  We will answer the following questions: What does the Bible say about race relations?  How did racism look when Jesus walked the Earth?  How should Christians be involved in efforts to increase understanding between different people groups?  Is diversity a Christ-honoring concept?  How so?

Why Do Christians Disagree?

Christians radically disagree on some of the most critical issues that face our society today.  While to non-believers this can often look like needless bickering, Christians recognize that there are many ways to think about problems through a Christian lens.  In this club convo, we will examine one or two issues that Christians fundamentally disagree about and try to understand why we might disagree so fervently.  Topics will be chose after the consultation with those who sign up in early January.
