CAREER/INTERNSHIP FAIR RESEARCH
Make a list of
questions:
• Go to the company website and learn what they do. As you are
researching the website, you will most likely come up with
questions, but if you need help getting started:
Research companies
o What are their products/services?
o What is their mission statement?
o What kinds of positions are offered?
o Do they have a specific link to college recruiting? Check it
out.
o Where are there offices located? (national/international)
o What would you like to know about the company?
Questions for the recruiter
o How do students get started in this field?
o What majors/skills are you looking for?
o What do you like about working for this company?
o What sort of training would help me move ahead in this field?
o If I am interested in this company, what should I do next?
• Make a list of the companies you are interested
in and prioritize them. This will ensure that you have a chance
to visit with all your key recruiters.
Introduce yourself!
MOVE OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! Whether
you are outgoing or shy, it is important to develop the skills to
speak professionally with others. Now is a good time to begin!
• Prepare a 2-3-line script about yourself. In
the business world, it is called the “elevator pitch”: short and
concise information about yourself.
o Tell the recruiter your name, your class
year, and your major.
o Let them know why you came to their table. Ask your
questions.
• Rehearse your statement. Get comfortable with
saying it. The goal is to achieve a tone that shows interest,
motivation, and confidence.
For example:
“Hello (remember eye contact, smile, firm
handshake), my name is Walter Wave. I am a senior here at
Pepperdine, studying Business. I read about your company on the
website and am really interested in learning more about your
business. I am particularly interested in the area of…… (or) I
have previously done an internship in……...” |
