1)
What is Career Advantage?
Career
Advantage is a program designed to connect you with professionals in
your field of interest through job shadowing, informational
interviews, or e-mail/telephone correspondence. Through this
connection, you have the opportunity to learn more about a
particular career or industry before you choose a major, find an
internship, or graduate and apply for that first job. This
knowledge can help you make more informed career choices during both
college and after graduation. In addition, Career Advantage
provides the perfect opportunity for you to begin networking - the
key to success in any industry.
2)
How do I participate in
Career Advantage?
Participating in Career Advantage is easy. Simply register for
MonsterTRAK (see #3 below for specific instructions), then
click on “Career Advantage,” and then on “Search” to view the
available profiles. The profiles will contain information such as
Company Name, Job Title, City and State. Note: The Career Center
can provide you with detailed instructions on how to register with
MonsterTRAK.
3)
How do I register with
MonsterTRAK?
§
Go to
www.monstertrak.monster.com
§
Click on the green box
that says “Sign Up Here”
§
Choose “California” and
“Pepperdine University” from the drop-down menus and then click on
the green box that says “Sign Up”
§
If you are on-campus, this

are off-campus, you will need to enter Pepperdine’s password, which
is pepwaves.
§
On the homepage, you will

blue. Click on that link and follow the steps to register.
§
Once you have registered
and created your own username and password, log into MonsterTRAK and
you will be able to access the Career Advantage database.
4)
Once I’ve found a profile
who matches my interests, what do I do?
Contact the
Career Center at x4184 with the profile’s ID # (called the “Mentor
CCAN ID#). You will need to visit the Career Center to sign a
contract and obtain the profile’s contact information.
5)
What is the Career
Center’s role in helping me connect with the professional?
The Career
Center will act as the initial liaison by contacting the
professional to let him/her know that we have provided contact
information to you. After that, it is up to you to arrange a time
to meet, e-mail or talk to the professional.
6)
Once I’m ready to connect
with the professional, what do I do? What do I say to the person?
The Career
Center offers various resources to help you make the most of your
Career Advantage experience. You will receive a Student Guide
packet which includes information on appropriate attire, code of
conduct, suggested questions to ask the professional, and tips on
writing a thank you note after meeting with the professional.
Contact the Career Center at x4184 to request an electronic or
hardcopy of these resources.
7)
Can I ask the professional
for a job or an internship?
NO. Career
Advantage is meant to be a career exploration program not a job or
internship search program. The Career Center can provide you with a
list of appropriate questions to ask the professional that will help
you learn more about the industry, company or position. This is not
meant to turn one off from the program, but simply to keep the
program completely professional.
8)
After I meet with or talk
to the professional, is there anything else that I need to do?
YES. Be
sure to send a thank you note to the professional. Career Advantage
is a great way to network, especially if the professional is in the
industry you hope to enter upon graduation. A thank you note is
always appreciated and will help the professional remember you in
the future.
You also
will need to call the Career Center (x4184) and schedule an “exit
interview.” The interview should last approximately 30 minutes and
you will be given an evaluation form to fill out and a “Next Steps”
guide to further help you on your career search.
9)
Once my Career Advantage
experience is over what else can I do to further my career
exploration?
Career
Advantage is a stepping stone to assist you in finding a career that
suits you. The Career Center holds many more great resources for
you including Career Counselors, Career Ambassadors, an Internship
Coordinator, information about On Campus Interviews, and the Career
Coaching Program just to name a few. Feel free to visit the Career
Center or call x4184.
