Career planning is a process. The goal of this process is
to find a comfortable fit between who you are and what you
would like to do. The more you know about yourself and the
more you know about careers, the better prepared you are
to find a good occupational fit.
An understanding of your interests, skills, abilities,
values, and personality is the first part of the process.
Career exploration is the second. Published and on-line
resources can be a great way to learn about occupations.
In addition, speaking with professionals, academic
coursework, or internships can be another way of further
understanding occupational fields.
Sometimes, you may feel there is just too much
information to sort this out without assistance. Career
counselors can help you correlate your interests, values
and skills to occupational fields, and then help with the
resources to learn more about those fields, ultimately
planning your future career path.
