Internship Etiquette:
Rules and Guidelines Every Intern Should Know!
• Applying!
• Apply to 6-8 companies for your first “round”
• Apply only if you can commit to at least 12 weeks
• Make sure you have an answering machine with an appropriate
message
• Make sure you have a local contact number so companies do not
have to call long distance
• Tell your references you have listed them and where you are
applying so they are prepared if they are contacted
• Accepting!
• Don’t accept multiple offers
• Don’t say yes, and then say no
• Don’t expect to be exempt from Convocation—plan your schedule
accordingly
• If you accept, be prepared to finish what you start—your
non-completion affects other future students and the University
• Interviewing!
• Arrive early
• Make a great first impression
• Consider what is appropriate to wear
• Turn off your cell phone before an interview
• Have 5 questions you can ask the interviewer
• Send a thank-you note after an interview as quickly as
possible
• Don’t sit down until asked
• Always ask before taking a business card
• Starting!
• Congratulations!
• You are embarking on a very unique learning experience
• What you invest in time and energy will benefit your
internship and you
• What do you want to get our of this internship?
• Arrive early (again)
• Notice what everyone is wearing
• No IM-ing! (Find out what your organization's policy is
regarding personal
calls and Internet usage)
• Work so that you can ask your supervisor for a letter of
recommendation
• Eating!
• Enter gracefully
• Know your way around the table
• Order with care—not too messy or to pricey!
• Give your host your undivided attention
• Be pleasant and courteous to the wait staff
• Send a thank-you to the person who paid
