Pepperdine Screens 'The Stoning of Soraya M.' with Cast and Crew

The Center for Entertainment, Media, and Culture at Pepperdine University is hosting a screening of 'The Stoning of Soraya M.,' a drama about human rights abuses in Iran, set to hit theatres in late 2009. The screening will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9 in Elkins Auditorium on the Malibu campus, and will be followed by a panel discussion with director Cyrus Nowrasteh, producers Steve McEveety and John Shepherd, and the stars of the film, Mozhan Marno and Navid Negahban. more


Author and Alum Leslie Landis Explores the Art of Overeating

Leslie Landis finds humor in the battle between two American extremes: a national obsession with both calorie counting and self-indulgence. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the Pepperdine Libraries and Graduate School for Education and Psychology (GSEP) will host an interview and book signing with Landis as she talks about her new book, The Art of Overeating: A Bellyful of Laughs About Our Food Phobic Culture. The event begins at 4 p.m., in Payson Library on the Malibu campus. more


Natural Science Seminar Presents Research on Noise and Amphibian Decline

Amphibians, like frogs, toads, salamanders, and small worm-like creatures called caecilians are declining, all around the globe. In fact, they are the most endangered group of vertebrates on the planet--over one-third of all amphibians are threatened with extinction. The reasons remain undetermined, but noise may be a factor. more


MFA in Screen and Television Writing Club, Courier 12, Hosts Writer Dean Batali

The master of fine arts (MFA) program in Screen and Television Writing at Seaver College will host Dean Batali, a writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and executive producer of That 70's Show. He will share his experience as a Christian in a Hollywood writers' room on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m., in room 140 of the Malibu campus Center for Communication and Business. more


Professors Gary Cobb and Jane Ganske Perform "A Reformation Celebration: Music of the Reformation Tradition"

Professors Gary Cobb and Jane Ganske will perform an organ recital of music in the Reformation tradition on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Malibu's Stauffer Chapel. The "Reformation Celebration" performance begins at 12 noon, with Grant Bryan accompanying Cobb and Ganske on the trombone. more


Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies Hosts Inaugural Conference to Explore Religious Common Ground

The Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies will host its inaugural conference to explore its central mission of reconciliation of the children of Abraham. "Finding Common Ground" will bring together leaders from the three great monotheistic religions--Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--to focus on shared issues that unite the three communities. Finding Common Ground: Reconciliation Among the Children of Abraham takes place in the Elkins Auditorium in Malibu, on Monday, Nov. 2. more


Natural Science Seminar Presents "Genomics of Crop Plants" with Timothy Close

The Seaver College Natural Science Division continues its weekly lunchtime seminar series with a lecture by Timothy Close, professor of genetics at UC Riverside. In his lecture, "Genomics of Crop Plants," Close will present an overview of his research on the plants that feed the world--grasses and legumes--at 12 noon on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in room 130 of the Keck Science Center on the Malibu campus. more


Pepperdine Volleyball Battles Breast Cancer with "Dig Pink" Charity Game

For the past several years, NCAA women's volleyball programs across the country have done their part in the battle against breast cancer. Pepperdine raised more than $800 with its "Dig Pink" match on Thursday, Oct. 22 against San Francisco in Firestone Fieldhouse. more


Center for the Arts Presents "Laura Ingalls Wilder: Growing Up on the Prairie"

The pioneering adventures of beloved author Laura Ingalls Wilder comes to Pepperdine University on Saturday, Oct. 24, as the Center for the Arts presents an original musical production, Laura Ingalls Wilder: Growing Up on the Prairie. The musical will grace the stage of Smothers Theatre, Malibu, at 11 a.m., followed by an afternoon performance at 1 p.m. more


Lee Kats Presents Seaver Faculty Colloquium Exploring Declining Amphibian Populations

Lee Kats, the Frank R. Seaver Chair in Natural Science, will present "Understanding Amphibian Decline" as part of the Seaver Faculty Colloquium series on Thursday, Oct. 22. The lecture, which includes contributions by students, begins at 4 p.m., in the Kresge Reading Room of Malibu's Payson Library. more

The Seaver College Natural Science Division continues its weekly lunchtime seminar series with a lecture by David Strong, associate professor of mathematics at Pepperdine University. From Wednesday to Thursday, Oct. 21 to 22, Pepperdine University will host a Veritas Forum, an interactive and inter-disciplinary conference that seeks to engage students and faculty in discussions about life's hardest questions and the relevance of Jesus Christ to all of life. more
