Science and Religion History Expert Ronald Numbers Presents "Antievolutionism in America"

Ronald Numbers is an eminent figure in the history of science and religion, as well as an authority on the historical significance of creationism and creation science. On Thursday, Nov. 19, he will come to Pepperdine University to present "Antievolutionism in America" at 7 p.m., in Malibu's Elkins Auditorium. Numbers' lecture will continue the 2009-10 W. David Baird Distinguished Lecture Series at Seaver College.

Numbers was a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the author or editor of numerous books including Galileo Goes to Jail, and Other Myths about Science and Religion (ed.); Darwinism Comes to America; The Creationists; and Science and Christianity in Pulpit and Pew. He has also held two of the highest offices in the History of Science Society, as the president and editor of the renowned academic journal, Isis.

Other Numbers presidencies held include the Society of Church History, the American Association for the History of Medicine, and the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science/Division of History of Science and Technology. He has been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Sarton Medal.

Numbers received his Ph.D. in history of science from the University of California at Berkeley, and is currently the Hilldale and William Coleman Professor of the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Each year, the W. David Baird Distinguished Lecture Series brings nationally renowned speakers to come to the University and give a lecture, followed by a question and answer period. Sponsored by the Seaver Board of Visitors and the Seaver Parents Association, the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series provides Pepperdine students, faculty, staff, and the Malibu community the opportunity to hear a variety of outstanding national scholars and professionals who are exceptional examples in their field.
