Anjel Helms Fulbright, Germany Major: Biology & Biochemistry Anjel Helms, a dual major in biology and biochemistry and a minor in German, will be conducting a research project titled, "Effect of Plant Water Stress on Resin Terpene Composition in Norway Spruce (Picea abies)" at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jaka, Germany."I'm going to be looking at the effect of water stress on terpene production in conifer plants," Helms explains. "Pine trees produce sap and that's their major defense mechanism against bugs and infections. In the face of climate change, one thing that we're seeing a lot of is forest die back. Entire strains of trees are dying." |

Braden Mogler Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Major: Sports Medicine Braden Mogler hopes to spend his life working as a doctor with Spanish speaking people who do not have access to basic healthcare in the US and abroad. He is co-leader of UM's Freshman ministry and works as a science tutor for the Athletics Department. He will graduate in 2009 and travel to Latin America to study health sciences and explore how public health is carried out in local communities. |

Laura Merwin Fulbright, Australia Major: BS Biology summa cum laude Laura Merwin participated in the Florence International Program from 2005-2006 and in the NSF funded Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Biology in 2007. She continued to do research and work in the Natural Science Division. Laura will spend 12 months at Curtin University, Australia, examining plants in drought and fire prone Mediterranean ecosystems that have evolved unique life-history types. |

Anna Jacobsen Fulbright NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Major: BS Biology Anna Jacobsen, Fulbright recipient to South Africa, graduated from Seaver College with a B.S. in Biology in 2003. She received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to pursue graduate study and is now a Biology Lecturer at California State University Bakersfield. Her research centers on plant evolution and ecophysiology. She recently received the Billings Award from the Ecological Society of America for Physiological Ecology and the Best Student Oral Presentation award at the International Mediterranean Ecosystems Conference. |
