Gregory V. Martinez Memorial Scholarship

The Gregory V. Martinez Memorial Scholarship was initiated by the Martinez family in memory of their son, Greg Martinez. Greg was a 1990 Sports Medicine graduate who died in a car accident on May 19, 1991. Greg was an outstanding student demonstrated by his high grade point average, his participation as a teaching and research assistant in Sports Medicine, and his many extracurricular and service activities. After graduating, Greg worked as a full-time research assistant in the Biology department at Pepperdine and tutored high school students in his spare time. Greg's personal dream was to enhance people's quality of life by combining his love for God and people, with his interest in medicine and sports. Greg had been accepted to medical school and planned to start his studies to become a physician in the fall of 1991. Greg Martinez would have wanted others to be granted the same opportunities he had received at Pepperdine University. Therefore, the Gregory V. Martinez Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to the student who best exemplifies the traits and characteristics of Greg.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a Sports Medicine major
  • Must have completed 30 credit hours at Pepperdine prior to the start of the subsequent academic year
  • Must have completed a minimum of two Sports Medicine classes prior to the start of the subsequent academic year
  • Must have "unmet need" as determined by the Financial Aid Office or have a student loan(s) for the upcoming academic year where the Martinez scholarship award could replace or eliminate the need for student loan(s). (This criterion applies only to students receiving federal or state financial aid.)
  • Minimum Pepperdine cumulative GPA of 3.0

The Gregory V. Martinez Memorial Scholarship will be awarded based on GPA, demonstrated record of involvement in Sports Medicine and allied health field activities outside of the classroom (such as research and/or internship experiences in sports medicine, leadership in Sports Medicine or other clubs, volunteer activities in health-related fields) and financial need.
