Shanghai, China: Course Offerings

 

 SHANGHAI RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
FALL & SPRING 2008-2009

General Requirements: While studying in the Shanghai Program, all students must enroll in 12-18 units including a Chinese course each semester for a letter grade.

Pre-Requisites: Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for each course they intend on taking overseas. Waivers cannot be issued for students to take courses without meeting prerequisite requirements. No exceptions will be made. Please contact Nichole Skelton (nichole.skelton@pepperdine.edu) in IP with any questions.   

Students will register for their Fall Shanghai courses online in March during Fall 2008 registration.  Students will register for their Spring Shanghai courses online in November during Spring 2009 registration.  Please check your Pepperdine email for your exact registration time; and the International Programs website http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/internationalprograms/ in March and November for the course call numbers.

Purchase your textbooks before you go overseas. 
Students are expected to have textbooks the first day of class.  Textbooks will be available at the Pepperdine bookstore in Malibu.

EACH SEMESTER:

HUM 295 – The International Experience (0-1) CR/NC grading only. An optional course designed to maximize the student’s international experience by providing opportunities to engage more fully with the culture and to reflect more carefully on the experience.
SOC 200 – Introduction to Sociology (3) (GE Human Institutions)
BIOL 107 - Plants and the Environment (4) (GE Lab Science)
CHIN 151 – Elementary Chinese I (4)

FALL ONLY:

CHIN 251 – Second-Year Chinese I (4) (GE) Prerequisite: CHIN 152
HUM 212 – Western Heritage II (3) (GE) Prerequisite: HUM 111
ART 438 – Non Western Art (4) (GE Non-Western or Fine Arts; Art majors may receive upper division credit towards their major requirement)
ASIA/HIST 330 – History of Traditional China (4) (GE Non-Western)
POSC/INTS 344 – International Relations (4)
REL 301 – Christianity and Culture (3) (GE Religion) Prerequisite: REL 101 or REL 102

A fall semester Educational Field Trip is part of this program.

A fall semester Educational Field Trip is part of this program.

Classes normally meet 4 days a week. A long weekend for travel will be scheduled in the Fall semester. Students will register for their Fall Shanghai courses online in March during Fall All courses offered depend upon the availability of qualified faculty and other program activities depend upon qualified personnel. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances.
