The Shanghai Family

Meet or contact the Shanghai Program Staff. *Faculty from Fudan University and other local Pepperdine local adjunct faculty members will teach the courses.

The City

Shanghai is the largest city in China, and the seventh largest city in the world. This magnificant city is located on the Yangtze River in Eastern China. Since market restrictions were lifted, Shanghai has been a leading force in China's economic reform, embracing the forces of business and emerging as an international metropolis with both modern and traditional Chinese features. Shanghainese enjoy one of the highest standards of living in China. As one of the nation's most cultural, commercial, financial, and industrial centers, it's no surprise that Shanghai is preparing to host the 2010 World Expo. The Jia

Students live in the Pepperdine owned Shanghai Jia, meaning house. The Pepperdine facility is located in the French Concession area of Shanghai near the American Consulate. The facility houses students, the Visiting Faculty family, classrooms, a library, computer laboratory, student center, laundry facilities, and offices for the program. The Jia is conveniently situated in between two subway stations and two bus stops. There is an incredible variety of sites and eateries close by and further into the city. Meals

A Chinese and American style mixed breakfast will be provided in the house seven days a week, with bao1zi3 包子 (steamed stuffed buns), mian4bao1 面包 (steamed rolls/bread), other local Chinese breakfast foods, and a selection of cereals, yogurt and juices. Typically eggs and bacon or sausage are available every other day. Students will be provided with stored value cards to purchase lunch and dinner on their own. Students are highly encouraged to get to know some of the small shops and restaurants around the Jia and within walking distance at JingAn Temple. You are also free to use the program kitchen to make yourself meals according to your preference.

Educational Field Trips

Some locations students have visited in the past include Vietnam, Shangrila, Bejing, Xi'an, and Cambodia. In the fall of 2011, students will be traveling to Tibet, and in the spring of 2012, the educational field trip will be to Cambodia. Locations of the 2012-2013 Educational Field Trips have not been determined.
