The City

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and the third largest in Europe, with a population of 5 million people. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great over 300 hundred years ago and served as Russia's capital until 1917. It is known as Russia’s “window to the west.” Its network of canals and baroque and neoclassical architecture give the city a European flavor. St. Petersburg has always been a city of ideas; it is the place that incited the Russian Revolution, leading to 70 years of communist rule. It was also the place that encouraged democracy, when the tide began to change. Students will be in the city during the time of year known as the White Nights –the long summer days when the sun barely dips below the horizon, the city succumbs to spring and the parks are filled with flowering trees.

Housing and Meals

The students will live in residence and attend class on the campus of St. Petersburg Christian University (SPbCU). SPbCU became one of the first Evangelical higher educational institutions to be established in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The campus is located near the central section of the city and features modern facilities where students can comfortably live and study. Most meals will be provided on campus for the students.

Proposed Field Trips

Students will have two major Educational Field Trips – one to Moscow, the capital of Russia and the other to Novgorod. In addition, students will take local excursions to the famous Hermitage Museum containing the largest collection of Rembrandt’s works, Dostoevsky’s home where he wrote Crime and Punishment, and the Mariinsky Theatre where the most famous Russian ballets are performed.

Costs

The tuition cost is $1,210 per unit and each student must take a minimum of 5 units. The International Programs Charge of $5,200 covers orientations, airfare and transfers to and from airports, educational field trips, rooms, most meals, and other program extras.
