Heidelberg, Germany: Course Offerings

 

 HEIDELBERG RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

 FALL & SPRING 2007-2008

Prerequisite: Students must complete GER 151 or its equivalent by the end of the Spring 2007 semester to participate. Students participating in the Spring Only 2008 semester must complete GER 151 by the end of the Fall 2007 semester.

General Requirements: While studying in the Heidelberg Program all students must enroll in 12-18 units including a German course each semester for a letter grade.

Students will register for their Fall Heidelberg courses online in March during Fall 2007 registration. Students will register for their Spring Heidelberg courses online in November during Spring 2008 registration. Please check your Pepperdine email for your exact registration time; and the International Programs website http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/internationalprograms/ in March and November for the course call numbers.

Students who participate in both the Fall and Spring Semesters of this program can take the following to complete their Foreign Language General Education requirement:

• GER 182 Intensive German I, fall (5) and
• GER 282 Intensive German II, spring (5) (GE)
Prerequisite: GER 151

EACH SEMESTER:

  • GER 152 – Beginning German II (4) Prerequisite: GER 151
     
  • GER 251 – Intermediate German I (4) (GE) Prerequisite: GER 152
     
  • GER 252 – Intermediate German II (4) Prerequisite: GER 251
     
  • HUM 295 – The International Experience (0-1) CR/NC grading only.  An optional course designed to maximize the student's international experience by providing opportunities to engage more fully with the culture and to reflect more carefully on the experience.
     
  • ENG 380 – Topics is Literature: German Literature in Translation (4) (GE Literature)
     
  • PSYC 200 – Introduction to Psychology (3) (GE Human Institutions)(Dr. Steve Rouse)
     
  • PE Elective Courses CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee.
       PE 182 – Beginning Fencing (1) $250
       PE 183 – Advanced Fencing (1) $250
       PE 196 – Weight Training (1) $250

FALL ONLY:

  • FA 240 – Introduction to Art and Architecture (3) (GE Fine Arts) Art and Art History majors may not receive credit towards the major.

SPRING ONLY:

  • GER 282 – Intensive German II (5) (GE) The second of the two-course sequence equivalent to GER 152, 251, and 252. Open only to students who study in Heidelberg both semesters. Prerequisite: GER 182

  • HIST 519 – Hitler and the Third Reich (4)

  • POSC 510 – German Government and Society (4)
     
  • PSYC 321 – Personality (4) Prerequisite: PSYC 200 or 210

A spring semester educational field trip is part of this program.

Cost: Flat-rate tuition (12-18 units) is identical to that in Malibu. Additionally, the International Programs Fee covers room and board charges equivalent to those in Malibu, round-trip airfare, the educational field trip, and other extra events and excursions. Students live in Moore House, a Pepperdine facility.

Classes normally meet 4 days a week. A long weekend for travel will be scheduled in the Fall semester.

All courses offered depend upon the availability of qualified faculty and other program activities depend upon qualified personnel. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances. The International Programs Office will always have the latest information concerning these programs.
