BUENOS AIRES HOME-STAY PROGRAM
FALL & SPRING 2008-2009

Prerequisite: Students must complete SPAN 151 or its equivalent by the end of the Spring 2008 semester to participate. Students participating in the Spring Only 2009 semester must complete SPAN 151 by the end of the Fall 2008 semester. The prerequisite for all 300-level SPAN courses is 252. The prerequisite for all 400-level SPAN courses is the successful completion of one 300-level SPAN course.  Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for each course they intend on taking overseas. Waivers cannot be issued for students to take courses without meeting prerequisite requirements. No exceptions will be made. General Requirements: While studying in the Buenos Aires Program all students must enroll in 12-18 units including a Spanish course each semester for a letter grade. 

Students will register for their Fall Buenos Aires courses online in March during Fall 2008 registration. Students will register for their Spring Buenos Aires courses online in November during Spring 2009 registration. Please check your Pepperdine email for your exact registration time; and the International Programs website http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/internationalprograms/ in March and November for the course call numbers.

Purchase your textbooks before you go overseas. 
Students are expected to have textbooks the first day of class.  Textbooks will be available at the Pepperdine bookstore in Malibu.

The Buenos Aires Program Fall semester is approximately from September to December. The Spring semester is approximately from February to May.

Students who participate in both the Fall and Spring Semesters of this program can take the following to complete their Foreign Language General Education requirement:

SPAN 182 Intensive Spanish I, fall (5) and SPAN 282 Intensive Spanish II, spring (5) (GE) Prerequisite: SPAN 151
 

 EACH SEMESTER:

• HUM 295 – The International Experience (0-1) CR/NC grading only. An optional course designed to maximize the student's international experience by providing opportunities to engage more fully with the culture and to reflect more carefully on the experience.

HIST 320 – Pre-Columbian Civilizations of the Americas (4) (Non-Western Cultures GE)

SPAN 152 – Beginning Spanish II (4)  Prerequisite: SPAN 151

SPAN 251 – Intermediate Spanish I (4) (GE) Prerequisite: SPAN 152

SPAN 252 – Intermediate Spanish II (4) Prerequisite: SPAN 251

SPAN 341 – Advanced Grammar, Composition, and Creative Writing (4) Prerequisite: SPAN 252

SPAN 380 – History and Culture of Latin America (4) Prerequisite: SPAN 252

PE 191 – Individual Exercise (1) CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee.

PE 592 – Tango (1) CR/NC grading only. (If taken in partial fulfillment of the fine arts general education requirement, must be taken for a letter grade.)

• BA 492 – Current Issues in Management (4) International Management majors may receive major credit for this course

• SPAN 182 – Intensive Spanish I (5) The first of the two-course sequence equivalent to SPAN 152, 251, and 252. Open only to students who study in Buenos Aires both semesters. Prerequisite: SPAN 151

• SPAN 449 – Literature of Latin America I (4) (GE Literature) Prerequisite: Successful completion of one 300-level SPAN course. Credit towards Spanish major or minor

A fall semester educational field trip is part of this program.

• ECON 211 – Introduction to Macroeconomics (3) (Human Institutions GE)  Meets major requirements as well. 

• HUM 313 -Western Heritage III (3) (GE)  Prerequisite: HUM 212

• SPAN 282 – Intensive Spanish II (5) (GE) The second of the two-course sequence equivalent to SPAN 152, 251, and 252. Open only to students who study in Buenos Aires both semesters. Prerequisite: SPAN 182

• SPAN 346 – Basic Translation (4) Prerequisite: SPAN 252

SPAN 451 – Literature of Latin America II (4) (GE Literature) Prerequisite: Successful completion of one 300-level SPAN course 

• BIOL 108 - Genetics and Human Affairs (4) (GE Lab Science)

PE 157 – Surfing (1) CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee

A spring semester educational field trip is part of this program.  

Classes normally meet 5 days a week. A long weekend for travel will be scheduled in the Fall semester.

All courses offered depend upon the availability of qualified faculty and other program activities depend upon qualified personnel. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances. The International Programs Office will always have the latest information concerning these programs.
