Summer Residential Programs: Madrid

 


MADRID HOMESTAY PROGRAM
INTENSIVE SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
May 14 - July 25, 2007

Prerequisites: Spanish 252; a 2.3 minimum GPA; and 30 units by the end of the Spring 2007 semester.

Program: This Program meets the intensive language immersion requirement for the Spanish major. Students live in carefully selected Spanish homes in Madrid and classes will meet at the University of Nebrija. All program participants take a language pledge to speak Spanish only at all times. Students must enroll in a minimum of 8 units including SPAN 390. Students will register for their Summer IP courses online in Spring after their contract signing. SPAN 390 - History and Culture of Spain (4 units) Required for all program participants. Counts for SPAN 347 major requirement.
SPAN 350 - Advanced Spanish Conversation (4 units)
SPAN 455 - Spanish Literature II (4 units) (Literature GE) Prerequisite: SPAN 341

Travel: There will be a weekend Educational Field Trip to Barcelona as well as excursions to places of academic and historical interest in Spain.

Personnel: Maria Elena Villegas will co-direct the program and teach SPAN 390. Mar Campelo will co-direct the program and teach SPAN 455. University of Nebrija faculty will teach SPAN 350.

Meals: Students will be provided two meals per day by their host families and there will be a weekly group meal. They will receive an allowance for their third meal on class days. Other meals, including meals while traveling on weekends, will be the responsibility of the student.

Cost: The tuition cost is $1,010 per unit, and each student must take a minimum of 8 units for a minimum cost of $8,080. The International Programs Charge of $6,410 covers orientations, airfare and transfers to and from airports, educational field excursions, room, most meals, and other program extras. Textbooks and personal costs, such as individual weekend travel, are not included. Financial Aid is available for eligible students. * Schedules depend upon airline space availabilities and may be changed. All courses and other program activities offered are dependent upon availability of faculty who teach these courses. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances.
