Florence Summer Program

 

FLORENCE SUMMER PROGRAM

Prerequisites: 2.3 minimum GPA and 30 units by the end of Spring 08. Students are encouraged to take HUM 111 and REL 102 prior to the program.  The prerequisite for all 300-level ITAL courses is 252. The prerequisite for all 400-level ITAL courses is the successful completion of one 300-level ITAL course.  Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for each course they intend on taking overseas. Waivers cannot be issued for students to take courses without meeting prerequisite requirements. No exceptions will be made. Academic Program: Students must enroll in a minimum of 8 units. Students are required to take Italian. Students will register for their Summer IP courses online in Spring after their contract signing. Please check the IP website for the course call numbers.

Purchase your textbooks before you go overseas. 
Students are expected to have textbooks the first day of class.  Textbooks will be available at the Pepperdine bookstore in Malibu.

ITAL 342 - Italian in Communication: The Language of Media (4) Prerequisite: ITAL 252
HUM 295 – The International Experience (0-1) CR/NC grading only. An elective guided journal course for students who wish to extend their introduction to the culture and history of Italy.
PE 185 – Beginning Modern Dance (1) CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee.
PE 186 – Advanced Modern Dance (1) CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee.
PE 198 – Individual Exercise (1) CR/NC grading only. Requires the payment of an extra fee.

Location: Students live in Pepperdine University’s Villa Tagliaferri. This historic, University-owned facility in Florence is within walking distance of the city’s world-famous museums and historical sites. The facility houses 54 students, the Visiting Faculty family, classrooms, a library, computer laboratory, student center, laundry facilities, and offices for the program. Florence’s main railway station is within walking distance of the villa.

Travel: Round-trip travel between LAX and Florence on a group-flight is included in the program fee. An Educational Field Trip is also included as a part of the program.

Meals: Most meals will be provided. They are prepared by an Italian chef and served in the house. Meals while traveling on weekends will be the responsibility of the student.

Personnel: The Visiting Faculty member will be Paul Contino who will teach ENG 370. Program Director Elizabeth Whatley will teach REL 301 and HUM 295. Long-term Pepperdine local adjunct faculty members will teach the other courses.

Cost: The tuition cost is $1,070 per unit, and each student must take a minimum of 8 units. The International Programs Charge of $6460 covers orientations, airfare and transfers to and from airports, educational field excursions, room, most meals, and other program extras. Textbooks and personal costs, such as individual weekend travel, are not included. Financial Aid is available for eligible students. * Schedules depend upon airline space availabilities and may be changed. All courses and other program activities offered are dependent upon availability of faculty who teach these courses. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances. The International Programs Office will always have the latest information concerning these programs.
