EAST AFRICA

Communication, Culture and Development

Prerequisites:
2.3 minimum GPA and 30 units by the end of Spring 08.  Students must meet all prerequisite requirements for each course they intend on taking overseas. Waivers cannot be issued for students to take courses without meeting prerequisite requirements. No exceptions will be made. Academic Program and Registration:
Students must enroll for a minimum of 4 units, but may enroll for up to 8 units. Service Learning, in the form of relief or development work, will be an integral part of this program.  Students will register for their Summer IP courses online in Spring after their contract signing. REL 301 - Christianity and Culture (3)
(Fulfills Religion GE requirement) Prerequisite: REL 101 or 102
COM 513 - Intercultural Communication (4) (Fulfills Non-Western Cultures GE requirement)
HUM 295 - International Experience (1) CR/NC grading only.  A course designed to maximize the student's international experience by providing opportunities to engage more fully with the culture and to reflect more carefully on the experience.

Travel:
This program combines academic study with immersion in a challenging, non-Western cultural setting. The focus will be on issues related to cross-cultural communication, global poverty, and economic development. Students will spend 3 weeks in Jinja, Uganda engaged in classroom study, service learning, and experiential encounters with African culture. Events will include a rafting excursion on the Nile River and an overnight visit to a rural African village. Students will then travel to Kigale, Rwanda where they will visit sites related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide and investigate current initiatives aimed at reconciliation and reconstruction. Housing and Meals:
Room and most meals are provided. Students will stay in hotels, guest houses, village homes, and go camping.

Personnel:
Dr. Gary Selby will be the Visiting Faculty Member. On-site faculty will also include Benjamin Langford, Spencer Bogle, and Mark Manry.

Cost:
The tuition cost is $1,070 per unit, and each student must take a minimum of 4 units. There will be an additional International Programs Charge of $5600 that will cover orientations, airfare and transfers to and from airports, educational field excursions, room, most meals, and other program extras. Textbooks and personal costs (including immunizations) are not included. Financial Aid is available for eligible students. NOTE: Because service learning is an integral part of this program, students are permitted to raise funds from churches and other interested persons or organizations in order to cover the International Programs Charge portion of the program.

*Schedules depend upon airline space availabilities and may be changed. All courses and other program activities offered are dependent upon availability of faculty who teach these courses. The University contracts with scheduled air carriers and local operators and travel dates may be changed in the case of armed conflict, terrorist activity, natural disasters, strikes, or other unforeseen circumstances. The International Programs Office will always have the latest information concerning these programs.
