Summer Programs

Summer General Education Programs

Although the majority of students at Pepperdine choose to spend a full academic year or semester overseas, many students also study abroad during the summer months. In fact, many students that study overseas for a semester or year overseas often return overseas for a summer program or internship program!

Every summer, Pepperdine offers international programs in each of its six University-owned facilities: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; Heidelberg, Germany; Lausanne, Switzerland; London, United Kingdom; and Shanghai, China. Each of these programs offer general education courses with selective upper division courses centered specific areas of interest. For instance, a program in London might offer both general education and major courses, topically concentrated around history and politics. Although the area of study may change location to location and summer to summer, there will always be a program in each of these six locations.

Summer Internship Programs

In addition to general education programs during the summer, Pepperdine offers summer internship programs in four of its locations: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; London, United Kingdom; and Shanghai, China. Internship programs consist of a combination of education courses and a local internship. If accepted to an internship program, students will meet with an internship coordinator who will help select an internship based on the student's area of interest.

Summer Special Interest Programs

Lastly, Pepperdine offers a handful of "Special Interest" programs, which vary summer to summer and are typically a bit shorter in length. These programs often have even more specified areas of interest or are for students in majors who might not have the chance to study abroad in the academic year (i.e. theatre or music majors). Whereas the general education and internship programs typically run around 8–10 weeks long, special interest programs usually run 34 weeks long. Some special interest programs are held in one of Pepperdine's six residential locations, but most are held in unique locations to give students an even broader range of options for the international experience.

In most recent years, the special interest programs offered have included: Crossing Boundaries Leadership Institute (Lausanne, Switzerland), Fiji Mission, Edinburgh Theatre, Heidelberg Music, Florence SACI (Studio Art Centers International), Russia, Madrid (Spanish Language Intensive), and East Africa.

Summer programs are encouraged for all Pepperdine students, especially those who are unable to study abroad for the full academic year. There is no better way to spend your summer than completing courses towards your degree while spending a summer abroad and experiencing all this world has to offer!
