Airlines have strict luggage
allowances, and they will charge you a costly excess baggage fee for
exceeding the maximum weight or size allowed. In some cases they may
refuse to allow luggage on the airplane.Typical Luggage Allowance*
Airlines allow two (2) pieces of checked luggage. The maximum
weight of each piece is 50- 70 lbs, depending on the airline. The total maximum dimension (Length +
Width + Height) can be 62”. While this may not seem like much space
or weight, keep in mind that you are responsible for carrying all
your own bags. Please note that if your luggage is over weight, the
airlines will make you repack to get the luggage within the maximum
weight requirements.
In addition, airlines allow one piece of carry-on luggage (maximum
weight of 13 lbs and a total dimension of 22” x 16” x 8”), and one
personal item like a purse or briefcase. Students usually find it
useful to take a backpack to use for weekend travel. Should this be
your choice, it will be your carry-on and must meet the size and
weight guidelines. Expect carry-on luggage to be carefully inspected
by airport security.
*AIRLINE RESTRICTIONS VARY. CHECK WITH YOUR AIRLINE FOR
THE MOST CURRENT LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE.
