Course Requirements

Nine upper-division courses are required. In preparation for the major, the student must take HIST 200, HUM 111, HUM 112, and HUM 113. Grades are for these courses will be counted in the grade point average for the major. Students should take HUM 300 as soon as possible. Students must take three related courses in an emphasis (one course from three of the groupings below, where each of the three courses come from the same time period), one course from the group left out in the emphasis, and four additional courses from among the groupings (courses must be outside the emphasis, but not all of these courses may be from the same group).

  • History
  • Literature (including French, German or Spanish)
  • Philosophy, theology or church history
  • Art history, music history or theatre history

All course selections must be approved by the student’s advisor. Students should select an emphasis upon entry to the program or in the first term of the program. No course which is used to satisfy a general education requirement may also be counted toward the humanities major.
