Congratulations to Seaver's 2008 Fulbright Scholars

Brian Clark graduated cum laude from Seaver College in 2006 with a BA International Studies. While at Pepperdine, he studied abroad in Lyon, France, worked as the personal assistant to Consul Véronique Marounek at the Consulate General of Belgium in Los Angeles, and interned at the Embassy of Chile in Washington, DC. Currently, he is serving as a Teach For America charter corps member in a socioeconomically underprivileged community on the island of O'ahu. After completing the Fulbright  in Spain he will pursue an master's from Columbia University in International Education Development and he aspires to become an education specialist with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

Keith Colclough graduated magna cum laude with a BA in music. He has been actively involved in both the music and theatre departments playing leading roles in several operas and musicals. Keith has been awarded vocal scholarships from the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Sigma Alpha Iota Pasadena Alumni Chapter and the Village Voices Chorale. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, a music honor society, and has been accepted into the master's program at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he hopes to continue pursuing a career in opera.  Keith will study vocal technique at the Mannheim Musikhochschule  in Germany.

Laura Merwin graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Biology. During her sophomore year, she participated in the Florence International Program 2005-2006 and in the NSF funded Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Biology in 2007. She continued to do research and work in the Natural Science Division during her senior year.  She was awarded Outstanding Graduate of the Natural Science Division.  Laura will spend 12 months at Curtin University, Australia, examining plants in drought and fire-prone Mediterranean ecosystems that have evolved unique life-history types. 
 

 

Erin Shitama graduated magna cum laude and majored in International Studies with an emphasis in Intercultural Communications and a minor in Sociology. She spent a year abroad in Heidelberg and has participated in Model United Nations, served on the Global Tides Review Board, Forum for Political Understanding (vice-president), and has co-founded a group exploring women's role in peacebuilding. She worked at the ISLD for four years, and held an internship with Rich Dawson, Director of OISS. Erin will travel to Indonesia as an English Teaching Assistant.

 

Alissa Smith graduated magna cum laude with a major in Creative Writing  and a minor in Philosophy. She served as the vice-president of philanthropy of Pi Beta Phi, Student Service Coordinator of in Florence, Italy, United Friends Coordinator for the Pepperdine Volunteer Center and as the Spirit Cup Chair for the Homecoming Host Program. She served as the President of the Student Alumni Organization, and sat on the Alumni Leadership Council as the Seaver student representative. She was also a member of the Seaver Executive Council, a class leader for the Senior Challenge initiative and the President of Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honor Society.  She will travel to Turkey next year and then pursue a career in publishing in New York.

Fulbright Experiences in the Past

Read an interview with Michael Engle in which he shares his experience learning how Tibetan monks train attention in children (read the interview).  The Fulbright grant provides graduating seniors and alumni with opportunities to conduct research or teach English abroad.
