Junior Writing Portfolio

Student Requirements

  1. All first-year students will receive an email detailing the requirements of the Junior Writing Portfolio. The most important thing to do is to digitally store every paper that you write at Pepperdine by uploading each one to: http://storage.pepperdine.edu. Every student has a private, password protected storage folder here. This is the best place to store papers until the time for submitting your JWP arrives.
  2. When students have acquired 60 units of credit, they will submit a portfolio for evaluation by the JWP Committee (consisting of faculty members from across the disciplines). Each portfolio must include:
    1. A cover letter from the student (2 pages, double-spaced), which explains the choice of papers included in the portfolio and describes his/her writing experiences during first two years at Pepperdine.
    2. 4 papers from classes taught at Pepperdine and a copy of the assignment, if available.
    3. Record of Portfolio Submission form, detailing the name of the instructor and the class for which the paper was written, and the date the paper was submitted for grading. (This form is available for download by clicking here). All papers that are submitted are subject to verification for plagiarism and authorship.
  3. Specific Requirements: (Please provide substitutions if necessary, and explain your choices in your cover letter)
  1. Papers should be from at least 3 different courses
  2. At least one should be in the student's major. (If no class has been taken in the student's major then please explain this in your cover letter and submit a paper in a related discipline.)
  3. At least one paper should be research based.
  4. At least 2 papers should be written during the sophomore and/or junior years.
  5. One paper (but no more than one) must be from ENG 101 or equivalent (such as Great Books or Social Action and Justice Colloquium). If you did not take these course, please submit an appropriate substitute and explain your choice in your cover letter.
  6. The entire portfolio should include approximately 20 pages of writing. (20 pages is the minimum required number of pages. It is fine to include more than 20 pages.)

* Transfer students may use up to two (2) papers from other institutions. At least two (2) papers should be from Pepperdine University. These do not need to be the originals with the professor's comments and grades on them. Paper copies or digital files are fine.
