Junior Writing Portfolio

Assessment

All portfolios will be evaluated by a committee composed of professors from across the disciplines using the Junior Writing Portfolio Scoring Rubric. This rubric will assess the following aspects of student writing:

1. Clarity/Style
2. Organization/Fluidity
3. Explanation/Evidence
4. Critical Thinking
5. Research Techniques
6. Mechanics/Usage

Each category of student writing will be scored on a scale from 1-5 (with 5 being the highest). The entire portfolio will then be given one of the following grades:

• PASS
• PASS WITH DISTINCTION – Students whose portfolios receive this rating will have this distinction reflected in their academic transcripts)
• FAIL – Students who do not pass the Junior Writing Portfolio will be required to take an additional writing course, JWP 301 (Junior Writing Portfolio Workshop), in order to pass the JWP requirement.

Students who receive a Pass or a Pass with Distinction will receive a grade of CR (credit) on their transcripts for JWP 301P. Those who receive a Pass with Distinction will also have a note added to their transcript indicating that they pass "with distinction."

Students who receive a Fail for the JWP will have the grade NC (no credit) recorded on their transcript for JWP 301P and will have to take JWP 301 (the intensive writing workshop class) in order to complete the requirement.
