These paintings are inspired by scenes along the Los Angeles River. I'm attracted to its surreal quality, a completely urbanized natural environment, a river coexisting with a metropolis. The steep canals, designed to contain a large river, remain near dry most of the year, resembling my imagination of an empty L.A. freeway.
I intended to create abstract, geometric compositions from these simple landscapes. I painted layer upon layer leaving only subtle hints of what was once visible before the pavement was poured.
In my work I want to create a sense of control, as the concrete walls exist to control the river. I also sought to simplify the scenes in order to reveal the L.A. River's essential elements, such as architectural structure, organic lines, and various textures.
