Opera Program

The Flora L. Thornton Opera Program at Pepperdine offers a many-faceted approach to the development of the young singing actor. Performance opportunities each year in fully-staged productions of opera and musical theatre, summer study abroad and exposure to top professionals in the field are hallmarks of the program.

Faculty members have extensive experience in many of the world’s leading opera houses. Recent opera productions, designed or supervised by an award-winning resident professional staff, have included Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Abduction from the Seraglio and Così fan tutte, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel. One unique aspect of the program is the close cooperation of the Music and Theatre departments. All productions in both areas are cast by open audition.

Recent graduates are already making their way at some of the nation's finest young artist programs, graduate schools and conservatories, including the Los Angeles Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, Yale Graduate Opera Program, New England Conservatory, Peabody Institute, Northwestern University, Rice University, UCLA and USC. Since there is no graduate music program at Pepperdine, Pepperdine graduates can enter graduate programs with lots of on-stage experience behind them!

Summer Opera Institute

Students have the opportunity to study opera abroad in the summers at one of the University's campuses in Heidelberg or Florence. Every other year the Summer Opera Program provides students the opportunity for intensive study of operatic repertoire and acting techniques. Initiated in the summer of 1998, the Summer Opera Program brings students in contact with artists from the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, European opera houses and the Broadway Musical Theater. The summer program alternates among the Pepperdine campuses in Malibu,  Heidelberg and Florence.
