Classical Guitar Program 

Thank you for your interest in the Classical Guitar Program at Pepperdine University and studying with virtuoso Christopher Parkening.

Pepperdine offers a Bachelor of  Arts in Music with an emphasis in Classical Guitar Performance. The music program, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, also includes a rigorous core curriculum of music theory  and music history, along with   small ensemble participation and private guitar instruction.

Every semester, each music major with an emphasis in classical guitar participates in:

• seven one-hour private lessons with Christopher Parkening.
• weekly private lessons with Adjunct Professor Anastasios Comanescu (optional).
• one 30 or 60-minute recording session at a professional studio in Los Angeles.

Group activities each semester include:

• one four-hour Christopher Parkening Master Class.
• weekly studio classes with Christopher Parkening & Professor Anastasios Comanescu.
• MUS 145 Performance Skills for Classical Guitar.
• MUS 150 or 350 Guitar Ensemble.
• two one-hour Group Guitar Classes (open to all Pepperdine students).
• Pepperdine Student-led Guitar Concert Series

Additional opportunities may include:

• on-campus performances at special University events.
• off-campus performances at venues in Malibu and neighboring cities.

Music majors with an emphasis in Classical Guitar at Pepperdine University study specific works that provide them with a balance of technical and musical challenges, creating a diverse and rich repertoire suitable for performance.

 

Applicants who wish to major or minor in music with an emphasis in classical guitar performance must:

1. Apply to Seaver College.
2. Apply to the Music Department.
3. Audition in person or by recording.

Acceptance into the Music Department and the awarding of scholarships are contingent upon both the audition and acceptance into Seaver College.
