A NEW CD BY ANDREW MALLOY
Andrew Malloy has released his first solo CD “Best of Friends”.
Malloy is a professional trombonist living in Los Angeles. He works
in studio orchestras and can be heard each year on many movie
soundtracks. He also performs in several Los Angeles area
orchestras. “Best of Friends” features new works for trombone and
piano commissioned by Malloy from composers Stanley Friedman, Jim
Self and Lincoln Hanks. It also includes the first recording of John
Stevens’ “Sonata for Trombone and Piano” as well unpublished works
by Jack Hayes and Robert Marsteller. Mr. Malloy is joined in the
recording by piano accompanist Junko Ueno Garrett, a Kawai artist.
The project was recorded by Herbert (Sonny) Ausman, a trombonist
with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The CD is available for purchase
at www.hickeys.com
and
www.tapmusic.com.
The commissioning and recording of these works represents the
achievement of a longtime goal for Mr. Malloy. As a performer and
teacher he has always tried to find interesting new works written
for trombone. Finally he decided to take the initiative and have
music written for him.
Malloy: “Coming up with a title for this CD was probably the
easiest part of the project. I have always considered it a great
gift to be able to earn a living as a musician. That alone would be
enough for me, but the thrill of such an opportunity is enhanced by
the privilege of working with a large group of superb musicians who
have also become very close friends. It is very important that each
of these works, which now become available to all trombonists, has a
very personal connection for me”.
This project is the first of at least two CDs featuring new
works. Malloy is currently awaiting the completion of commissions
from Adrienne Albert, Bill Cunliffe, Ken Kugler, Bill Reichenbach,
Craig Russell and John Steinmetz. As is the case with the pieces
heard on “Best of Friends,” these new works will be recorded after
world premiere performances in the Los Angeles area.
