Stephen
grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, playing Principal Cello in the
Greater Boston Youth Orchestra and soloing with Arthur Fiedler and
the Boston Pops. He attended the Juilliard School in New York, Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio and received a Doctor of Musical Arts
degree in Cello Performance at Catholic Unviersity in Washington,
DC.. Dr. Custer became Principal Cellist and Soloist with the
Syracuse Symphony in 1971 where he remained until joining the cello
section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1974. He has performed
solos with numerous orchestras and chamber music ensembles,
including the Westlake (CA) Chamber Ensemble, Amici Musicae and
Philharmonic ensembles, and has given many recitals in California
and in the eastern US. As a member of the Philharmonic, Stephen has
played over 4000 concerts under four Music Directors at the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion, the new Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl,
and the World!
Dr. Custer has taught cello students of all ages in all the areas
where he has resided, including Syracuse University, Ohio
University, Moorpark College, Culver City and currently at his home
in Westlake Village. He enjoys bicyling, sailing and travelling in
his leisure time.
