Research Employers

In preparing to meet recruiters, visit their central Web site and gather basic information.  Be sure to visit the "News and Awards" section, and If a publicly traded company, visit the "Investor Relations" section of the site.

Online Research Questions

  1. What kinds of products/services are offered?
  2. What is the company's mission statement?
  3. Where are the various office locations?
  4. What kinds of positions are offered?

Ask Questions

After researching an employer, continue the research by asking questions in person. Asking questions is the most natural way to break the ice whether you're at a party or a career fair.

Sample Questions for a Career Fair

  1. What does your company value most on a resume?
  2. What do you like about working for this company?
  3. Tell me what kind of person kind find success in your company?
  4. What sort of training would help me move ahead in this field?
  5. If I am interested in this company, what should I do next?
  6. Are there any Pepperdine alumni at your company?
  7. Can I have your business card in case I have future questions?

30-Second Introduction

Prepare a 2-3-line script about yourself. In the professional world, it is called the "elevator pitch": short and concise information about yourself. Rehearse your statement. Get comfortable with saying it. The goal is to achieve a tone that shows interest, motivation, and confidence.

  • Tell the recruiter your name, class year, and major.
  • Tell them why you came to their table and ask your first question.

For example:

"Hello (remember eye contact, smile, firm handshake), my name is Walter Wave. I am a senior here at Pepperdine, studying Political Science. I read about your company on the website and am really interested in learning more about your business. I am particularly interested in the area of…… (or) I have previously done an internship in……..."
