Why Should I Go?

  • Collect job, internship, and graduate school prospects
  • Gain contacts within organizations and collect business cards
  • Get inside information that's not posted on any company or grad school web site
  • Submit your resume for real jobs and internships

How to Prepare

1.  Before the Fair

  • Research the companies that interest you by visiting their web site. As you research, start a list of questions for the recruiter.
  • Write your resume and make 5-10 copies. Use the Career Center Resume Guides or call the Career Center, x.4184, to make an appointment for one-on-one assistance.

  • Prepare your best looking clothes. This means slacks and a tie for men, and slacks/skirt and a blouse for women. According to a national study, over 50% of employers expect students to dress business casual.

  • Practice your 30 second introduction. For example, "Good afternoon. My name is Jane Doe. I'm a senior, economics major interested in management training programs. I reviewed your website and am interested in learning more about the opportunities in sales and management..."

2. During the Fair

  • Introduce yourself and ask questions with confidence.  Remember, you are interviewing them.

  • During your conversation, request and distribute business cards. Simply say, "It's been very nice talking with you and learning more. May I have one of your business cards in case I have future questions?" As you take their card, naturally give them yours.

  • Distribute your resume. This can be an awkward exchange for some students, but remember, employers want your resume. A natural way to offer your resume is to give them your resume along with your business card in the exchange described above.

3.  After the Fair

  • Follow-up with hand written "thank you" cards.  Keep it short and simple, refer to a topic you and employer may have talked about at the fair, and mail to the address shown on the employers business card.
