Office of International Student Services - FAQ

What is Seaver College?

Seaver College is the undergraduate school of Pepperdine University. When a student graduates, his/her diploma will state Pepperdine University.

Do I need to have a personal interview?

Pepperdine University does not offer personal interviews with an admission counselor. However, we do offer on-campus information sessions. These 45-minute sessions, which will be conducted in Stauffer Chapel, are intended to give visitors a personal look at Pepperdine University and inform them about the admission process. Guests will also have the opportunity to have their questions answered by an admission counselor and to take a campus tour. Reservations are recommended; please contact The Office of Admission.

What are you looking for in a student?

We are looking for students who exhibit both academic and personal excellence. We analyze academic merit in combination with a variety of other factors, including recommendations, the personal statement, short answers, school activities, community activities, leadership potential, passion, and more. Students are not admitted based solely on academic merit. Likewise, students are not admitted based solely on strong resumes and recommendations.

How many years of foreign language do I need?

Pepperdine does not have any specific high school requirements for admission.  Students are required to take a foreign language while attending Pepperdine, but we do not require high school students to have taken a foreign language for admission consideration.  We encourage students to take the most challenging course load possible while in high school in which can still do well.

Is there a minimum GPA or SAT/ACT to apply for admission?

No, we do not have a minimum GPA or SAT/ACT score required for applicants. Our admitted student class has an average GPA of 3.8, an average ACT score of 28, and an average SAT score of 1290 for the critical reading and math sections.  On the 2400 SAT scale, which includes the math, critical reading, and writing sections, the average score falls between 1930 to 1950.

Do you average test scores if I take the SAT or ACT more than once?

No. We combine your highest math score and your highest verbal score from any testing date to calculate your final SAT score. For the ACT, we accept your highest score on each section from any testing date to create your highest composite. It is to your advantage to take both tests as many times as possible to generate your highest score.

Do you require SAT II's?

No, we only require the SAT I or ACT.

I’ve decided to come back to school after an absence. Is the admission process the same as that of an incoming student?

The application process is the same for you as it would be for any other student. However, If you have attended college in the past, and have completed more than 30 units, you will be considered a transfer student.

I was home schooled. Is there any difference in my application process?

No.

I’m an international student, but I have a green card (or Permanent Resident Visa). Am I still considered an international student?

No. You are considered a domestic student.

I’d like to request a fee-waiver form.

We do not have a Pepperdine fee-waiver form. You may use the SAT (College Board) fee-waiver form, or your high school counselor may write a letter explaining the extenuating circumstances.

If you are applying online, select the option that reads “online fee waiver” and follow the instructions.

How do I schedule an overnight stay?

Are freshmen required to live on campus?

Yes. Living on campus really does enhance a student's overall college experience. Freshmen are required to live in the residence halls unless they live at home with a parent or guardian.

Do you guarantee housing?

Freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed housing on campus. Sophomores must submit a housing contract before the fall room reservation deadline in order to be guaranteed a space on campus. Juniors and seniors are not guaranteed on campus housing.

Is there a curfew in the residence halls?

No. Students do not have to check in or out of the residence halls.

What kind of rules exist in the campus residences?

Pepperdine University seeks to foster a Christian environment in which to work, live, learn, and grow. Students are encouraged to treat one another with respect and maintain the highest standards of personal honor, morality, and integrity.

Alcohol and drug use on campus is not allowed. Smoking is prohibited in all University buildings, including the residential community. Visitation hours (in the residence halls and apartments) for members of the opposite sex are from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week. Visitation is allowed in the lobbies of the residence halls between the hours of 7 a.m. and 2 a.m.

How religious is Pepperdine?

Pepperdine is an Christian university that is affiliated with the Church of Christ, but is independent of direct church support or control. Pepperdine is proud of its Christian heritage and stresses a value-centered education combining excellent academics with a tradition of Christian values and ethics.

Students at Pepperdine are diverse in their beliefs and their religious involvement, but all students are required to take three religion courses as a part of their General Education requirements.

For students who are interested in pursuing religious growth, Pepperdine supports many Christian activities on campus, such as weekly student devotionals and a major retreat each semester.

All students are required to attend the Convocation/Chapel series in order to receive a unit of credit towards graduation. In order to receive full credit each semester, students select the 14 program options that most interest them from over 100 Convocation/Chapel services. Options include lectures on motivational, social, spiritual, or political topics.

Do students need a car?

It is not absolutely necessary for students to have a car. Many students at Pepperdine do not have cars. If a student wants to have the freedom of going off campus whenever he or she chooses, a car is important. However, students without cars will often share rides and carpool with other students to major campus events. This often provides a great way to meet new people.

There are also weekend events and bus trips sponsored by the Student Programming Board and the Student Government Association where transportation may be provided for participants.

If the student chooses to bring a car, he or she will need to register the car on campus.  Parking on campus is free of charge and all students, including freshmen, are allowed to have cars on campus.

Are tutoring services available on campus?

Yes. Tutoring services are offered through various organizations and departments on campus such as the Writing Center and the Cultural Enrichment Program.

What measures does Pepperdine take to ensure student safety?

Pepperdine has taken many measures to provide a safe campus, such as entrance security booths, a campus escort service, 24-hour campus security personnel, locked residence halls and suite areas, a blue-light system, and well-lit parking lots.

What is your most popular major?

Pepperdine’s majors and programs are firmly grounded in the liberal arts.  You will be receiving an excellent education regardless of the major you choose to pursue. The philosophy at Pepperdine is to teach students how to think and learn, not just to teach them information. Regardless of your major, you will learn all the necessary skills that are needed to succeed in your career or graduate school.
